Animal Ordinance

As a home rule municipality, the Town of Castle Rock has its own set of local laws and codes. From time to time, those local laws need to be reviewed. Town staff in 2017-18 completed a comprehensive review of the Town Code related to animals, which led Town Council to adopt changes that went into effect June 1, 2018. View the Town’s Animal Code.

As a planned follow-up to that process, Town staff in February 2019 followed up with Town Council. Council directed staff to further engage residents and to come back with information regarding potentially allowing the keeping of ducks, mini goats and mini pigs in Castle Rock.

Next steps: Town Council discussion May 21

Town staff has engaged residents and gathered information about potentially allowing the keeping of ducks, mini goats and mini pigs in Castle Rock. Now, Town Council will review staff's information and provide further direction at its May 21 meeting.

6 p.m., Council Chambers at Town Hall
100 N. Wilcox St.

Some basic guidelines under consideration are:

  • Duck provisions should closely mirror current provisions regarding chickens, including no more than eight or 12 ducks and chickens total, depending on lot size
  • Anyone keeping mini goats must have two goats, but no more; the number of goats would count toward the total allowed number of dogs and cats allowed, which is eight
  • The keeping of one pig would be allowed; the pig would count toward the total number of dogs and cats allowed
  • Height and weight restrictions would apply to both goats and pigs
