Back to school safety tips

Buses are out, kids are in the crosswalks, and the bell has rung. School is officially back in session. Parents may be rejoicing, but there are some safety tips to keep in mind before sending your students out the door.

Castle Rock Police and Castle Rock Fire and Rescue have teamed up to offer these seasonal safety tips.

  1. Teach your children to always use a crosswalk when crossing the street. Also, be respectful of crossing guards. They are helping make sure you stay safe.
  2. Don't pass a school bus with red lights flashing.
  3. Be aware of school zones, and make sure to stick to the speed limit.
  4. Make sure your children are wearing helmets if they're riding their bikes to or from school.
  5. Parents, never text and drive! Distracted driving can be deadly.
  6. Teach your kids about stranger danger. Make sure they understand to NEVER go anywhere with someone they don't know. Whenever possible, have your kids walk in groups, not alone.
  7. If your student will be home alone for a few hours after school, make sure they understand basic safety tips. Never answer the door or tell anyone they are home alone.
  8. Have a family plan. If something happens like a fire, make sure everyone knows how to get out of the house and where to meet.
  9. Keep garage doors closed at night. Leaving the door open invites petty theft.
  10. When leaving the car, ALWAYS lock the door and remove valuables.
